About this opportunity

Senators are Canadians of accomplishment and experience. They have four important responsibilities:

1. Legislate – In addition to proposing their own bills, senators review legislation passed by the House of Commons.

2. Represent – Senators represent their province or territory and give a voice to minorities.

3. Investigate – Through Senate committees, Senators investigate matters that are important to Canadians.

4. Deliberate – Senators draw on their diverse experiences and backgrounds to debate and vote on bills under consideration.

Composition of the Senate

The Canadian Constitution provides that the Senate has 105 appointed members divided among the provinces and territories as follows:

• Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan: 6 seats each

• Ontario: 24 seats

• Quebec: 24 seats (Quebec’s seats are allocated by electoral division)

• New Brunswick and Nova Scotia: 10 seats each

• Prince Edward Island: 4 seats

• Newfoundland and Labrador: 6 seats

• Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut: 1 seat each

The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments is accepting applications for one or more Senator for Manitoba positions.

Canadians may apply for appointment to the Senate through an open application process based on transparent, merit-based criteria and requirements under the Constitution.
